Study Visits - Slovakia & Apulia

The Leader programme is a new concept in Malta. In fact Malta is the only EU member state that has not yet started implementing this programme. For this reason, the rural development department, under measure 341 encourages study visits to other EU countries where the Leader programme is being implemented.

As a Foundation we believe that this opportunity should be given to as much people as possible and for this reason we have earmarked enough funds so at least every member of our foundation is given the chance to have firsthand experience of what Local Action Groups (LAG) can do under this programme.

For this reason we planned two study visits, one in Slovakia and one in Puglia. In Slovakia LAGs are still in their initial phase. This experience helped us to understand better the difficulties that LAGs faced during the creation of their strategy and therefore how they managed to solve them. On the other hand, LAGs in Puglia have a lot of experience and our delegation there built enough contacts which will serve us when we start implementing our strategy.

Slovakia 16-23rd August 2009
The first group took off from Malta on the 16th of August. Our study tour gave us a general idea of what Slovakia was able to attain with the help of EU funds, how they were managed, how LAGs were set up and what was the focus of their respective strategies.



Apulia 20-27th October 2009
The second group visited the Apulia region in Italy where LAGs have been operating for various Leader Programmes and have become a strong part of the Italian RDP. The Maltese contingent had the opportunity to meet with various regional LAGs some  of which were GAL Meridaunia, GAL Terra d'Arneo and GAL Trulli & Barsento.

Zejtun Locality Meeting - 31/10/09



The last of the series of locality meetings was in the locality of Zejtun. The following were the proposals made by those present:


§         Help with Farming Electrical Supplies
§         Embellishment of Alleys
§         Revival of Old Trades
§         Water En-catchment
§         Calendar of Events
§         Picnic Area
§         Rural Tourism
§         Olive Oil Production
§         Oil Museum
§         Create Historical Trail of Local Attractions
§         Develop the local M.U.S.E.U.M. building into an exhibition area which will cater for different exhibitions all year round
§         Development of Areas into Gardens with Endemic Species

Qormi Locality Meetings - 28/10/09 & 30/10/09

Two meetings were held in the locality of Qormi. The first one was held on the 28th of October at the St George's Primary school.

The following were the proposals made by those present:


§         Embellishment of the Qormi Valleys
§         Revaluation of the Qormi Valleys
§         Produce a roof for the Bowls Pitch
§         Refurbishment of the Qormi Bocci Club
§         Restoration of Local Statues
§         Restoration of the Local windmill
§         Restoration of Local War Shelters

The second meeting in Qormi was held on the 30th of October at the Local Council Hall of Qormi.

Those present made the following proposals:


§         Local Sports Complex
§         Calendar of Events
§         Improvement in the Building of the Qormi Hockey Club
§         Improvement of the Local Bread Festival
§         Help for local youth nurseries
§         Improvement to the local music schools
§         Regional Musical Festival
§         Live Broadcasts of Local Events in the Local Radio Stations
§         Local Sports Club Houses
§         Restoration of Historical Sites
§         Embellishment of Local Playgrounds
§         Improvement of the Local Outdoor Markets

Marsascala Locality Meeting - 17/10/09



On the 17th of October the ninth locality meeting was held in the coastal locality of Marsascala. This is what those present had to propose:

§         School Lighting Fixtures being Replaced with Energy Saving Ones

§         Installation of a Small Aero Generator (wind turbine) in School’s Surrounding Grounds/Fields

About This Blog


Countryside in Malta by Paul Mizzi

This blog was built to further promote the foundation GalXlokk in its process to evolve and start operate as a LAG. The foundation is made up of 12 public entities from 12 different localities and other 13 private entities.

The aim of the blog will be to increase the knowledge of the general public about the leader programme on the island especially in the southern part of it. The blog will also involve the stakeholders in the concerned area to participate in various polls, inform them about current activities that the foundation would be organizing and also serve as a discussion board for all of those who want to have their say about the programme and the foundation in general.

Nothing else remains to say for me except to encourage you to participate lively in our newborn BLOG.

Upcoming Activities

Study Visit to Bari
Bari

The foundation will be organising various study trips abroad to make its members more aware of the Leader Programme and increase their knowledge regarding Local Action Groups.

The second group will be heading to Bari on the 20th of October. A group of 10 active members will be attending to various seminars and workshops held in the Puglia region.

The group will stay in Bari for 7 days where the members will have the opportunity to visit various agritourism sites, enjoy the beauties of the Gargano and view the works of the already established Gal Meridaunia.


The foundation GalXlokk believes that its members are the base to success so it will be working to form its members properly to ensure the best performance in the Leader Initiative.
